'Kes' is the story of Billy Casper (David Bradley), a tormented, under achiever who is subjected to abuse both at school and at home. His bleak existence is counterpointed with his relationship with the kestrel he steals and trains. His ability as a falconer belies his lack of academic success but this is not a film about escape but a film about wasted potential.
