Volunteer Stories: Lina

Nikita's picture

As part of our celebrations for National Volunteers’ Week (1st to 7th June) we wanted to share stories from some of our wonderful volunteers. This is our third interview with a volunteer this week. See the first here and second here.

Lina runs our monthly Board Game evening and works with our outdoor arts team alongside being a member of our marketing team. Recently, Lina has stepped into the role of trustee on our Board.

What attracted you to start volunteering at the Rising Sun?

I was taking some classes at the Centre (Charleston & Burlesque) and had also been there for some music events in the past. I was thoroughly enjoying the atmosphere and was going through a period where I was trying to do more things outside of work that I felt was worthwhile, I had read on the website that the centre was always looking for volunteers and when leaving one job and suddenly finding myself with a bit more time I decided to take the leap and start volunteering. Originally, I started out small and didn't think I would stay that long but over the last 7 years I have taken on more things at the centre and I can't imagine not volunteering there.

What do you enjoy most about being a volunteer?

Some of the most amazing and fun people I've met I've met through the centre, so I guess that is what I enjoy the most, meeting interesting people and being part of a place so full of creativity and with such a welcoming atmosphere, and also doing my best to make people feel included.

What difference has volunteering made to you?

I definitely think volunteering has helped me be more social and to step out of my comfort zone as well as given me skills in marketing and how to organise events.

What impact does your volunteering have on the local community?

I would like to think that I help bring creativity and just some general fun to Reading by the things I do at the centre. Also as a volunteer I hope I help in some small way to keep this wonderful institution around for as long as possible.

A huge thank you to Lina and all of our volunteers who have made an incredible contribution to the community of Reading.
