This Weekend's Events (18th to 20th September)

Hi Everyone

September has been quite busy so far, and as we are nothing, if not consistent right now, we have yet another weekend this time round, starting with Friday, when we bring you STAND-UP CINEMA

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at the next Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at info@real-time.org.uk

This month's main feature is A TOUCH OF EVIL (Orson Welles 1958)

Just reissued is Welles’ noir thriller (quite different from the expressionistic Lady From Shanghai we showed last year). This is dark shadows, soft tones and murky half lights. The action takes place in a Mexican/US border town where an American engineer has been murdered. Welles is in full control from the masterful opening sequence and ensures every shot is memorable.

The story takes us into an increasingly dark world driven by the director's dark vision of human nature and his bravura filmmaking.

Stand Up Cinema Is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video.

We're open at 7pm and it'll cost you a paltry £4 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. A Touch of Evil starts showing at 8.00 pm

On Saturday it's time for BANDORAMA

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town.

“Portishead doing a Tarantino soundtrack” Huw Stephens, Radio 1
“With Smoky-voiced femme fatale Hatty Taylor on vocals, London-based three piece Vienna Ditto mix wild-eyed rockabilly riffs with sparse, atmospheric electronica.” Q Magazine

Female-fronted electronic blues duo Vienna Ditto will be released their debut album in June on Ubiquity Project Records along with the single ‘A Happy Car is a Stolen Car’

Hatty and Nigel first met when he started teaching her guitar around 2000, when she was 11. The lazy tyke never practiced but did have a most arresting voice. After a couple of years they lost touch, but bumped into each other in the street in 2009.

They recorded an electronic version of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire the next week, and the week after one of their own compositions, Long Way Down, which somehow ended up being played on Huw Stephens’ Radio One show.

An appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival followed and the band have since been given a Maida Vale session for Tom Robinson on BBC6 and have appeared on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks Music Show.

They have been given airplay on Radio One, BBC6 Music and XFM and received glowing reviews in Q Magazine, Artrocker and The Fly (RIP). They have also had their music used for several advertising campaigns, the most recent for Saks Fifth Avenue. Their music will also feature in Sacred Heart, a film by award-winning director Kosta Nikas, due out in 2015.

BLANK BIBLES
Our fave new six piece band of the year.Like Paul Simon having a punch up with Fleetwood Mac, whilst The Temper Trap are the referee.

CALUM FOAD
An out and out POP genius.  He will have his poster on your bedroom by Wednesday next week.

We're open at 8pm, and it'll cost you £5 on the door or £4 in advance from www.wegottickets.co.uk

Finally, on Sunday, MILONGA SIMPATICA presents TANGO SELECT

Reading’s own highly acclaimed tango band are back at the Rising Sun for another afternoon of live tango music. Playing a selection of tangos and vals, some of which you will recognise and others you may not. Tango Select play tracks which are a delight for dancers and great to listen to as well.

We're open from 4.30pm to 8pm.  And it'll cost you £6 on the door

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)

Have a nice weekend!
