This Weekend's Events (19th to 21st January)

Hi Everyone

Forrest Gump’s mother famously said “life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you’re going to get”.  Well, I can’t help thinking that Mrs Gump was buying the wrong chocolates.  The ones I get come with a little card that shows you which centres are which.

Anyway, we finally emerge from our post-christmas/post New Year hibernation with another busy weekend at the Rising Sun, starting with Friday and STAND UP CINEMA

Back to the Rising Sun and back to its more traditional Friday slot!

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at a future Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at info@real-time.org.uk.

Our main feature this month is BULLITT (Peter Yates, 1968)

Bullitt is an iconic perhaps seminal movie which while it may have paved the way for films like Dirty Harry and The French Connection has a less hysterical tone.
Frank Bullitt - a character who seems to be perfect for Steve McQueen - is an under pressure cop who manages to remain professional in the face of adversity and just a little bit cool (great cardigan) and there's a car chase apparently.

It'll cost you a paltry £4 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. Raging Bull starts showing at 8.00 pm.

Saturday sees another thrilling instalment of BANDORAMA

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town. This Saturday, we happen to be celebrating the birthday of our favourite mustachioed fire-bothering stick jangler Muz!

DOLLY AND THE CLOTHESPEGS
Now reaching the ten years old mark, Dolly and the Clothespegs just happen to be Reading faves and everyones' fave Kennet Delta Blues beat combo group.  (Whatever that means)

PINK DIAMOND REVUE
Rising Sun legends.  Electro beats for punks who roll.

HEAD DROP
New local 'supergroup'.  "Aggressive fuzzed-out psyche groove for people who can't drink caffeine after 5pm."  (So we're told)

We'll be open at 8pm.  And it'll cost you £6 on the door to get in (£5 in advance from www.wegottickets.com).

On Sunday, we pay host to our annual DANCE DAY

Dance Day is back!

Seven different dances, demonstrations and café with tea and cake.

Dance is social, active and creative. Improves fitness and health, is expressive and life affirming and is a great way to meet people.

Dance day is A WHOLE DAY OF FREE CLASSES in some of the worlds classic dance forms.

Dance all day if you want to or hang out in our cafe which will be selling home made cakes and savouries. (Each dance class means you can have a guilt free piece of cake – how amazing is that?)

We have a fantastic selection of classes for you to try this year:

11.00 Salsa
12.00 5Rhythms
1.00 Flamenco
2.00 Bachata
3.00 Kizomba
4.00 Swing
5.00 Tango

The day will end with demonstrations by the teachers and hopefully some free dancing.

All classes are free.

We're open from 11am to 7pm

For more information, contact Larry Watson / larrywatson58@hotmail.com / 07765 599 433.

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)
