This Weekend's Events (19th to 31st December)

Hi Everyone

I keep hearing some song where some bloke called Cliff Richard goes on about "logs on the fire and gifts on the tree".  I think it's safe to say that nobody in house is getting a new bike for Christmas.

Christmas, I'l say that word again.  It appears that the poor man's Channukkah is just around the corner.  As I speak. turkeys all over Britain are listening to a non-stop selcetion of Leonard Cohen and Morrisey, Phil Spector is calculating how much snout he can buy from this year's sales of his Christmas album, the Queen is looking theough her speech one last time and wondering she should call her eldest son's bluff and make him do the speech instead.

Oh, and before it completely slips my mind, we have a full weekend of events to tell you about at the Rising Sun...

Friday sees something special fron STAND UP CINEMA

The one place in Reading showing rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems!  It's also the one place in Reading where you can enjoy a nice organic beer with your popcorn (and also, we now offer fresh ground coffee!)

If you would like to showcase your work contact info@real-time.org.uk. They don't have to be in the final form, just 10 minutes or less!

This month's main future is ALPHAVILLE (1965, Jean-Luc Godard)

Alphaville is science fiction, science fiction as interpreted through the mind of Jean-Luc Godard where nothing is ever quite what it seems. Godard challenges pre conceptions with a black humour that makes alphaville at once a film noir and a vicious black comedy. Eddy Constantine plays Lemmy Caution – a character he had already played straight in a number of detective b movies - who is sent to a distant planet to confront the super computer Alpha 60. The film is a gem, Godard is a prankster, he destroys every concept he touches but always in an illuminating and entertaining way. He was also a technical innovator and this is one of his best films, well designed, groundbreaking and lots of fun.

One of Godard's classic movies, an absolute delight from start to finish

We're open at 7pm.  Short films start at 7.30pm and Alphaville starts at 8pm.  It'll cost you a paltry £4 at the door to get in!

On Saturday, it's time for BANDORAMA

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town.  Not only will there be an abundance of Mince Pies, but an aural feast from the following....

BEAR & THE WOODS
Our fave forward thinking folk punks.

BURNT TOMORROW
One of the finest punknroll bands, around.

DAMIEN A PASSMORE AND THE LOVEABLE FRAUDSTERS
The tallest and best country punk band in all the land.

We're open at 8pm, and it'll cost you £5 on the door or £4 in advance from www.wegottickets.co.uk

On Sunday, we have the final MILONGA SIMPATICA of 2014

A small, friendly milonga aimed at giving people a chance to dance tango in a relaxed and stress-free environment. Good company, tea and cakes are provided.  A nice way to wind down the weekend!

We’re open from 4.30pm and it’ll only cost you £6 on the door.

Finally on New Year's Eve, there's a BANDORAMA NEW YEAR'S PARTY

The powers that be at Bandorama HQ would like to invite to see off 2014 at the Rising Sun

The bar will be open...the fire roaring and more than likely a mixture of Staus Quo...happy hardcore and the August List on the stereo

Pop in for one or several.

We'll be open for 8pm and it'll cost you absolutely nothing to get in.  Spread the word!

That's everything for another weekend and also for 2014, just to remind you first of all, that you can find us at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST  (If you put us in your Google or Sat Nav, we shall magically appear)

Also, there's just to time to say...

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM EVERYBODY AT THE RISING SUN!!

See you all next month!
