This Weekend's Events (20th to 22nd February)

Hi Everyone

Apparently Eastenders fever has taken the nation by storm as people deliberate over who killed the character wot was portrayed by the actress who's got ambitions to do something else, maybe some more acting...  who knows?  Anyway, if you don't want to know the culprit scroll down now... Because I can reveal exclusively that it was Pete Doherty who apparently recently joined the cast as Greville, the womanising proprietor of the pop-up bakery and occasional website designer... in the scullery with lead-lined trilby

(Gary, I know you've been working a fair amount of overtime as it is, and I must say, mate, you're working a blinder!  But I might need you to double check this one again.  I keep hearing rumours he turns up in The Archers as frontman for the re-invented line up of Dross... with Matt Crawford as his manager.   Sorry about this)

Anyhow. I think that's enough of I, your humble narrator, delegating to junior staff and discussing "continuing drama" shenanigans.  It's time to let you know what's happening at the Rising Sun this weekend

On Friday, we bring you STAND-UP CINEMA

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at the next Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at info@real-time.org.uk.

This month's main feature is BLUE COLLAR (Paul Schrader, 1978)
Schrader wrote some of modern cinema’s all time classic films, such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Blue Collar is his directorial debut and it lives up to this pedigree and m ore. Not well known and considered to be one of the most underrated films of all time (look at the comments on IMDb). It features Yaphet Kotto, Harvey Keitel and Richard Prior as three work buddies who plan a heist. Not in any way your average heist movie, Schrader delivers a gripping drama with a political edge.

It'll cost you a paltry £4 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. If starts showing at 8.00 pm.

On Saturday, BANDORAMA and CLUB VELOCITY present IN MALCOLM WE TRUST

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town. This month's instalment of Bandorama just happens to celebrate the birthday of Malcolm "Malfunction" Unwin.  Not only will there be free cake and shizzle in abundance but the following prime slabs of live music for delectation!

LAUNCH CONTROL
Purveyors of proper Fat Mike flava UK pop punk. Like mummy used to bake.  Fat Wreck/Travis Cut/MXPX/Damaged Goods/J Church/Blink 182/China Drum/Household Name Records

SLY AND THE FAMILY DRONE
They have played ever year so far.  More punk than your mum.

PINK DIAMOND REVUE
Seriously tasty, tasty electro punk(S) fronted by a pint-sized Christopher Walken doppelganger.  Think Suicide/Art Of Noise/Renegade Soundwave

A seriously GREAT band.  And that's a fact!!

NEW PURITANS
The Family Unwin live and unleashed

We're open at 8pm, and it'll cost you £5 on the door or £4.40 in advance from www.wegottickets.co.uk.

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)

Have a nice weekend!

(What's that Gary?  Pete's in Falcon Crest now? We'll just have to leave it and hope no-one notices.  For your efforts though, I think you've earnt yourself a late start tomorrow.... shall we say 7am?  I'll sweep the ashes and light the fire.  Seeing as Hendryx J isn't ready for that kind of responsibilty just yet)
