This Weekend's Events (20th to 22nd March)

Hi Everyone

As we wend our way towards the end of March, people will be acidentally putting their clocks forward this weekend instead of next.  If you are one of those people, you happen to be in good company!  I, your humble narrator, had to double check myself...

Must be old age, I suppose. Never mind, why don't we all park our zimmer frames and walking sticks as one in common cause, and I can tell you what's happening at the Rising Sun this weekend?

On Friday, we bring you STAND-UP CINEMA

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at the next Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at info@real-time.org.uk.

This month's main feature is SOYLENT GREEN (Richard Fleischer, 1973)

Being shown in association with The British Science Association as part of Science Week, Soylent Green postulates a future where over-population threatens the world and food is in scarce supply.  Reputedly being remade, it’s certainly a film for our time. Charlton Heston is the cop investigating a murder that leads to a world-changing discovery. A tiny bit silly in places (scooping people up in big trucks) but with some really affecting moments.

This is a special event because it is being organised as part of science week and we will have a guest speaker -  Dr.Chuks Okereke an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment Science at the University of Reading - to give a short talk on some of the issues touched on in the film after the screening.

It promises to be an interesting evening - with opportunity for discussion and questions.

It'll cost you a paltry £5 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. Soylent Green starts showing at 8.00 pm

On Saturday, we bring you BANDORAMA

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town. This month's instalment of Bandorama just happens to celebrate the availability of some free cake and shizzle, but also the release of Vienna Ditto's latest single

VIENNA DITTO
Girl/Boy duo electro blues pop.  This single 'Hammer and a Nail' will be taken from their forthcoming debut album.

STODDLER
Local three piece space acid punxs.Hearty.

MATT MALTESE
The teenage genius back.He will be slaying the baby grand.  Greatttttttttt songs.  Voice of an angel.

We're open at 8pm, and it'll cost you £5 on the door or £4.40 in advance from www.wegottickets.co.uk

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)

 Have a nice weekend!
