An amazing opportunity to see three of the most respected musicians in their field playing together in the intimate surroundings and excellent acoustic of the Rising Sun. Dominic, John and Angharad have worked together in many different combinations over many years, but this is the first time they have come together to play as a trio. We are delighted that this incredible artistic collaboration is happening at the Rising Sun and hope you will join us to experience it.
John Butcher
John Butcher’s music ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback and unusual acoustics. A genuine innovator who has greatly expanded the technical possibilities of the saxophone, since the early 80s Butcher has collaborated with hundreds of artists, including Derek Bailey, Rhodri Davies, Andy Moor, Phil Minton, Christian Marclay, Eddie Prévost, Magda Mayas, Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Sophie Agnel, Gino Robair, Mark Sanders, John Tilbury, Okkyung Lee, John Edwards, Chris Corsano, Polwechsel and Steve Beresford.
“English saxophonist John Butcher may be among the world’s most influential musicians, operating at the cutting-edge of improvisatory practice since the ‘80s. Whenever an acoustic musician starts to sound like a bank of oscillators, a tropical forest, a brook or an insect factory, Butcher’s influence is likely nearby.” – New York City Jazz Record. https://www.johnbutcher.org.uk/
Angharad Davies
Angharad Davies is a violin player whose work exists between the thresholds of improvisation, composition and experimental music. Her approach to sound involves attentive listening and exploring beyond the sonic confines of her instrument and performance expectation. Being an intrepid collaborator has seen her work with the likes of Tony Conrad, Elaine Radigue, Tarek Atoui, Gwenno, Lina Lapelyte, Richard Dawson, JG Thirlwell and Annea Lockwood. As a composer she has been commissioned by Counterflows, LCMF, Tŷ Cerdd, Nawr, Explore Ensemble, GBSR duo, + AndPLAY and her music is often played on BBC Radio 3’s New Music Show. https://www.angharaddavies.com/
"Despite all we know about the violin and the once-new ways that people are playing it, Angharad Davies’ album […] transports us to another landscape altogether. We are strangers here and that is good.” – Tempo
Dominic Lash
Dominic is a double bassist and guitarist. As well as playing regularly with John Butcher and Angharad Davies, his most regular current collaborators include Heather Roche, Pat Thomas, and Alex Ward. He runs the label Spoonhunt and curates the Cambridge improvised music series Soundhunt with N.O. Moore. Dominic has played at the Rising Sun many times over the years. If you were lucky enough to catch his solo double bass set here in September you won’t to miss him as part of this trio with saxophone and violin. dominiclash.bandcamp.com
