Walkabout (Nicolas Roeg 1971)
Roeg’s first full directorial credit was for Walkabout. A stunningly composed film with all Roeg's signature camera work, cutaways and stillness. Two young children are stranded in the Australian outback where they meet a young Australian man on Walkabout, a ritual separation from his people. The clash of cultures seems gentle enough, communication is largely none-verbal and the movie was largely improvised. The result is a stunning essay on innocence and the many ways in which it is lost.
